I planted some pansies for Hanno

I took a quickie trip to Seattle for the weekend and plant pansies in our big plastic barrels. I do this every spring, around mid-March. Hanno and I used to garden together and now they remind me of him – he was a sweet and gentle dog (towards people).

I bought the pansies from Ravenna Gardens at the University Village – six different colors, three quarts each. The barrels can hold 12 plants, actually, but some of our pansies from last year made it through the winter and I decided to keep them.

Sometimes, Hanno used to pull out a few pansy plants from the soil when I wasn’t looking – one of those annoying things you wish your loved one was still around to do. And he loved eating the manure.

This is what one of the 2024 barrels looked like two months later (pictured below). I always grab this purple color scheme when I can – yellow and white in the center that gradually turns blue and then purple and then, sometimes, magenta. I also like the variety called ‘Aztec,” which is yellow-burgundy with dark burgundy veins.
