Over this past year, the boys have killed the grass. We had a pretty serious mud problem last winter where I was mopping the hallway twice per day with a laundry load of towels. After a quick online search, cedar play chips sounded like the best solution. I bought six cubic yards for our little dog-side-of-the-yard. Somehow we moved it all in two hours.
